White Dog and the rest of the White Dog Army was really drooping in last night's preview of summer heat. The fans were on but the air was still stifling. Steve stood up from his chair and everyone looked up. "I am going to take advantage of the remaining light to climb up on the roof and get the swap cooler going," he said. Tails wagged in appreciation. I tried to talk him out of using time he needed to spend elsewhere but he was concerned about Puff, Sachi, and even Taiko who were panting heavily.

We heard him thumping the cover off of the evaporative cooler and walking around as he dragged the hose for cleanup and then opened waterlines and such. It was dark when he came back inside.

"We have to hang on until first thing in the morning," he told us. "I need to replace the motor." So we opened all of the windows and turned every fan on "high" and slept facing the breeze.

None of us expected that Steve would head to the hardware store to be there at 6am, when they opened. Before any of us were even fully awake we could feel delicious cool air filtering down from the vents high up on the wall...and since Steve was still testing the system, that cool air soon became cold enough to initiate cuddling and blankets.

By breakfast the house was a perfect temperature and blessedly remained so as the thermometer climbed all day. I worried that Taiko, the former outdoor dog who still likes to lie on the deck would overheat...but even he seemed to appreciate the civilized advantages of forced cooling.

From the WDA, "Thanks, Dad!"
