White Dog graduates from "obedience" class today. She is supposed to unconditionally follow my commands without hesitation. She has learned the lessons well and responds perfectly under the trainer's eye because she knows that this is "positive incentive" training (a treat will come).

At home White Dog views my commands as conversational starting points. The "why" must be provocative and the request issued in a tone conveying respect. If not, White Dog feigns deafness or theatrically ignores me in obvious defiance.

"Cooperation," she points out, "Is much more effective than dominance!"
