November 26, 2010

White Dog, The Other White Dog, Another White Dog and yes, even Still Another White Dog all gave a blissful sigh as they paused before plunging their snouts into their various dinner bowls tonight. Turkey was not eliminated from the seasonal reasons to be thankful...it was only a day late! And baked sweet potatoes with butter and cinnamon! AND homemade pumpkin ice cream to cap things off! AWD and SAWD, we are pretty sure, were on a virgin voyage of family feasting but WD and TOWD led by example as they licked their bowls microscopically clean.

When we returned home yesterday after our wonderful outing, we too, wondered how Puff had fared being left alone all day. First we must interject that neither of the new kids has had a single accident in the house, nor have WD or TOWD felt the need to mark territory. That said, we expected Puff to either be in her crate or huddled under the benches on the deck. We were happily surprised that she was in the living room (of course she scooted into her den as soon as we arrived)! There was evidence that she had taken the opportunity to explore her environs a bit while all were gone...kibble from the communal bowl was gone, some chewies had been moved, and she had clearly gone in and out several times! We were pleased at her bravery and were even more astonished that Puff kept peeking out at us as we all settled into the living spaces...coming as far as a few steps inside the room before she ran back to her crate. We talked to her and encouraged without making eye contact or appearing to notice her, and for an instant while Steve was brushing his teeth, SAWD poked her head into the bathroom and nosed his leg. Progress even if it is just tiny tiny steps is still progress!

OH, this brought a smile to my face! I love it when pets show their trust in you even though their past was horrific.

Trust takes a lot of time, but with patience and TLC (which you have provided), everything is possible!!

Catching on reading a week's worth of blogs and so glad to hear of Puff's steps forward. They may seem tiny to you, but reading a week of events, I can see giant leaps. Puff is so lucky to have found you.

P.S. - remember that Kodiak came to us heart worm positive, too, so we have been through it. Let us know if you need anything.
