White Dog's only child era made it a lot easier for us humans to go out for dinner and to bring home a leftover morsel that would elicit wiggywags and yips of happiness. With The White Dog Army, a bite or two does not suffice. Fortunately the owner of our favorite Moroccan restaurant (with the world's best lamb shanks in White Dog's opinion) is a dog lover who understands our situation. "Just call me before you come in and I will save lamb shank bones for you," was his solution.

So tonight when we called, the pups were all excited about our night out and their ultimate reward...except that the restaurant was "out" of shanks tonight the hostess told us over the phone. We were as disappointed as the Army was but promised to make it up to them somehow. Guilt drove us to stop and pick up a fresh bag of ducky jerky on the way to the restaurant...just so we would have something to offer our forlorn furbabies.

Dinner was delicious and delightful as always. Steve's aromatic couscous filled all of the senses and my King's Bastilla provided an authentic touch of Marrakesh. It was Michael's maiden journey into the land of casbahs and tangines and although he was a little unnerved by the beautiful belly dancer, he enjoyed the experience, especially the minted tea.

After dinner Steve stuck his head back in the kitchen to thank our friend for such a wonderful repast. He was handed a takeout box filled to brimming with lamb chunks simmered in Mediterranean spices and apricots, "for your little White Dogs." Then the owner told us that sadly, this was his last night of business. With rent increases and the bad economy he was closing shop "for a little while." He, of course, refused to allow us to pay for the lamb, shrugging and explain it was near to closing and besides it would make him happy to know that White Dog and her siblings were sending him good luck for the future.

As they prepared to dive into the feast, White Dog, The Other White Dog, Another White Dog and Still Another White Dog listened to Steve explain the source of their dinner and in unison woofed a gentle and heartfelt "best of luck, we hope to see visit your new business soon...and thanks!"

Sounds like a very nice evening for the white Dog Army and for you. Sad for the restaurant owner though.

We were out for dinner too but our dogs have to be satisfied with the frozen kongs that we give them to work on while we're gone...
