June 18, 2011

White Dog knows that Saturday mornings we take Michael to volunteer at the shelter and then the White Dog Army goes out for some brisk exercise and then vittles, so she usually hops on the bed to awaken us bright and early. Her enthusiasm for this particular day of the week has spread to the rest and soon after we share a special morning cuddle with the Leader, we find our bed ringed by white faces peering at us, paws tapping the the closest body part, and tails wagging like supercharged windshield wipers. It is a delightful way to start the morning!

When we sit up and put feet on the ground we are swarmed by white floofy bodies pushing against us and demanding good morning cuddles and hugs. The white wave shifts from one to the other of us with everyone demanding equal attention from Steve and I. White Dog supervises the blizzard from between us on the bed.

Those of you who follow our story may remember how worried and saddened I was that Puff, when she first came to us, avoided contact and shied away from interaction with me. I despaired that she would never truly become part of our family. Thanks to great advice from many of you and the miracle of constant love, Still Another White Dog has not just healed from heart worm but has done an incredible amount of emotional mending. She still has moments when her eyes cloud over in a haunted look but she has come such a long way.

How far became evident this morning as we greeted the WDA. "Where's Puff?" I asked as I petted and scratched and cuddled. I was fearful that our tiniest least pushy girl had been squeezed out of the frenzy and had gone off by herself. The words were hardly out of my mouth when she pranced up to me...yes me!...and gently laid the heart shaped stuffie at my feet. She looked up and my eyes filled with tears of happiness.

Now I am realistic enough to know that SAWD has no idea of the human significance attached to that shape, but that fact that she presented me with a present, deliberately gave it to me, filled me with such a rush of joy and love. I softly stroked her sides and ears and slid my hands down her neck (she still does not like being held). "Thank you, special one," I whispered, "it is a great day to be alive! Thank you."

And with that we piled out into the living room to get the WDA Show on the road. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

What do you mean we don't know the human significance of that shape. Every dog knows what a heart is. :)

Sounds like there's a whole lot of white fluffy loving going on there. Enjoy your weekend!!

hey White Dog Army,

Sounds like you pups really know how to have a special morning! Your Saturday morning ritual sounds pawsome, and like so much fun!

Puff, it is so heartwarming that you understand you are a permanent part of the family, and the WDA, and feel confident and comfortable enough now to allow love to flow between you and them. I am so proud of you! Good job! I know it was hard, but you pushed through and you have made tremendous progress. Keep it up! It only gets better! :->

p.s. I agree with 24 Paws of Love. Humans don't give us enough credit. Puff knew exactly what she was doing! :->

Way to go, Puff. Kiska, who would not even approach me at first, now loves to come running up and flop over on her back for belly rubs - the ultimate symbol of comfort. Puff's time to be held will come.
