July 28, 2011

White Dog settled against me as usual when Steve got up early this morning and was preparing for that extra half hour of "sprawled on the bed with momma" snoozing but then she heard him say "I am going out to wash Pumpkin and to put on the new bike rack." She bounded off the bed and was clearly ready to assume supervisory obligations in an instant; I mumbled "have fun" and turned over stretching my arms and legs wide on the now luxuriously deserted bed.

Steve's birthday is not until the middle of August but he just had his favorite bike tuned up and has been riding around the neighborhood. He is itching to resume long distance weekend rides starting from remoter parts of town and taking advantage of our city's excellent bike trails. However his old rooftop carrier does not fit the minivan. The White Dog Army came to me many weeks ago suggesting that Steve needed a NEW carrier, one that would work on the White Dog Taxi. So last weekend we all went to REI (and its big summer sale) and bought Steve an early birthday present...a Thule hybrid rooftop rack system that will allow him to at least use a few of his old parts in a new workable configuration. He and Gregg and Candace have already made plans for a Sunday early morning ride based on this new gift. (White Dog is looking forward to chasing rabbits at the Nature Center and Quinn is anxious to share our shady oasis with Nuka, Puff and YoYoMa who have never been).

I knew the work this morning was going well because Puff ran through the dog door to check on Steve every time he went into the storage shed for tools. Nuka could see Steve and WD working outside and barked complaints that she was not allowed out front, off-leash like her sister was. TOWD laid on the concrete entry landing and kept watch through heavy-lidded eyes. Only YoYoMa stayed at the foot of the bed, keeping me company as he lay spread eagle on his back, snoring.

Yo and I were awakened by the rest of the White Ones and Steve coming back into the bedroom. WD had wet feet. Steve was damp and stinky..."the van is a LOT of car to wash" he huffed, "the roof seemed like a football field!" I suggested a shower and White Dog barked her agreement to him. As he disappeared down the hall, she moved up and rested her head on his pillow. "Not too self-serving are you?" I questioned as I put my arm over my precious girl and figured we had another 15 minutes at least.

Sometimes these lazy mornings are just heavenly - the ones where you know there's a flurry of activity far off somewhere but you just don't have to be involved? Happy Friday ;)
