White Dog and the White Dog Army
Wonderful World Wednesday

White Dog often wonders if her brother Quinn once had a loving human who cared for him but who died or was forced to leave him wandering the streets to end up at a city kill shelter. Quinn’s story is, of course, buried in his head and he never speaks of what led to his joining the WDA. But Quinn is a beautiful boy. While he was terrified, underweight and matted, it  didn’t seem as though he had endured a lifetime of being unloved or had chosen homelessness.
Homelessness leads to hopelessness…both in dogs and in humans. And when creatures give up, the world loses potential and possibilities. A hand up not only helps those in need but revives lost strength and energy that may someday make a HUGE difference in the world.

White Dog found this story wonderful because at her darkest hour, one teen’s world was changed, her talent recognized, and her loved ones saved...and the world rescued an enormous potential.

A dedicated marine biology student at a Long Island High School learned she was named one of 61 finalists for the $100,000 Intel Science prize just days after her family was forced to move into a homeless shelter. Samantha Garvey's intensive 6-years of research on mussel ecosystems led to her invitation to the prestigious national science competition.

Intel semifinalist Samantha Garvey spoke Friday of a "new beginning" for her and her family.

The same holds true for their spunky pit bull, Pulga, whom they were able to spring from a shelter thanks to an anonymous donor.

The family, evicted from their rented home on New Year's Day, will move from a homeless shelter to a three-bedroom, county-owned house in Bay Shore this month.

Now, thanks to news reports on TV and print, the 17-year-old student and her family have been flooded with offers of help, including a 3 bedroom home available soon from Suffolk County Social Services and money from a kind stranger to retrieve the beloved family pets from an animal shelter.

She said she never thought her biggest worries would be eliminated in a day. The family pets, including a dog, cat and turtles were also invited to move into the Long Island rental home, once repairs are completed in ten days.

The White Dogs have paws crossed that, whether Samantha wins or not, that she will go on to make a difference in the world…and to pay forward the wonderful opportunities she received..

Such a heartwarming story. Thank You.

As for homeless pet....wouldn't it be nice if they could only talk and tell you where they came from. Right now I'm perched on the edge of my chair as a little stray dog that came into our lives yesterday is snuggled up behind me. I know she probably has a wonderful home somewhere as she is well cared for, but no identification whatsoever. Hope her owners see the ad we put in the paper.
