July 7, 2012

White Dog and Oso were elected to be ready for an extra early morning adventure. When Steve returned from his 7am run with YoYoMa, Michael, and the two White Ones were heading to the Farmer's Market long with Steve! The much needed rain had left the ground spongy and actually muddy in places so we decided that I would stay at home with the rest of the White Dog Army for fear of getting mired.

Team Michael and Oso walked around the huge market filled with people and pups, stalls of fresh foods and flowers, and GREAT smells. Oso was an "AWWWWW" magnet, Michael reported, stopping people who wanted to pet him and say hello. As OAWD wagged, Michael talked about the Walk to End Cancer and handed out information cards. Oso was a pro and the team distributed their stack of cards in no time. THEY got to sit by the country band and eat a bit of breakfast as a reward.

White Dog and Steve had a dual job. Steve was shopping for produce for use across the upcoming week so they stopped often to smell apricots, purchase snap peas, and discover some kids selling the cutest baby beets from their own garden. Steve made two trips to the car with his treasures.

As they went from stall to stall, WD unfurled her glorious tail over her back and pranced to hghlight her showstopping beauty. She reveled in the compliments as people stopped to pet her or just exclaim, "your dog is so very pretty!" At each stall, they visited Steve asked to leave behind a stack of cards about the Walk to End Cancer and most vendors gladly agreed to spread the word. WD worked the crowd that gathered at one point by doing a few of her tricks: back up and bow; polar bear dance; and high five. Steve heard stories of others who had grown up with Spitz dogs and fond memories of heart dogs that still made their owners smile with a far-away look. He listened, as did WD with her head cocked, intently focused. He handed out cards about the Walk.

THEY had saved their favorite vendor for last. Valerie makes the most amazing candied apples and filled strawberries. She is a strong supporter of the fight to end cancer and proudly hands out the Walk cards all over town. Naturally, it was here that WD chose their reward for a morning's work well done. A white chocolate caramel apple, gooey with deliciousness and dripping with apple freshness. The two took their apple across the street to sit on the steps of a closed office building and enjoy together.

When they got home and proudly shared their purchases and success stories, White Dog had only one regret. "We didn't get any photos, momma," she said. "When you are with us, you hold the bags and all of the extra stuff so dad has free hands; without you we just couldn't manage to accomplish our tasks AND record it." "That is just fine, Little One," I caressed her as she yawned. "You did just fine and our friends will understand."

(Hi WDA, my family's the one moving to ABQ really soon)

Yay! A Farmer's Market! I am so excited to hear about all the wonderful things in our new city!

I was also wondering, could you please tell me the name of your vet? Your comments about her are truly wonderful! I would love to have the same amount of care for my furbabies. Thanks so much!

SwimFlyAway: Our Farmer's Market is such fun and filled with all finds of finds...and there are smaller ones all over town. EVERYONE brings their dogs and the best time to go is early morning.

Dr. Julia Skains is our most amazing vet. Her Office is called Good Shepard Animal Clinic on Menaul Blvd. She is an old-fashioned, common sense doc with great instincts. If you prefer the modern high-tech approach with all the bells and whistles, Dr. Reis at VCA is the geritric vet who saw Puff through her recent crisis. VCA is a major sponsor in our 2Million Dogs fight to end cancer. Hope this helps! When is the move?
