January 3, 2013

White Dog and the rest of the White Dog Army have been lulled into a false sense of "returning to normal" these past two days. Yes, Steve is back at work although school is still on break but his hours are only administrative and since the term has not resumed he is on a hiatus from the being-a-student demands. We have the luxury of a leisurely morning; Steve leaves at noon and is home by six. The White Ones are beside themselves with glee thinking this is our new normal.

Next Monday, however little they believe me, life will truly become topsey-turvey. Not only does the REAL normal two late nights and Saturday schedule return, but Cinder-fella turns back into a grad student. There is an additional adjustment they will have to make...one that they have caught glimpses of being shaped but don't yet fully comprehend.

Over the holidays we have purged boxes of stuff and old papers from the basement (over 30 of them) to create an empty room next to Michael's. We have shifted my painting studio and put the exercise equipment into the storage shed until warmer weather will allow us to set up an outdoor station. And tonight Steve is condensing and moving the stereo system to a space behind the door in the living room.

This is NOT Spring cleaning coming early but rather preparation for Monday when Quinn's girlfriend, Daisy, her poodle sister and kitty brother (and their two humans) move in for an extended stay as they find work and establish themselves in Albuquerque. This will make for a very crowded house but it will give our friends a chance to make their dream come true and, as White Dog reminds me, "remember, at one time we thought this house only had room for three, Momma, you, me and dad."

So as we mop up dust bunnies under the stereo stand, we anticipate our first adventure of 2013 a little like Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit--a little nervous about stepping outside of the way it is and irresistibly drawn to finding the answer to "what lies around the next curve."
