White Dog and the White Dog Army seemed to instinctively feel my need to gather the Pack close today. Within the sanctuary of our home and clustered together, it felt safe and reassuring to keep the rest of the world outside our doors.

We focused on the mundane routines of daily life...brushing shedding coats of white floof...making soup for dinner...watering the garden. The WDA patiently presented themselves over and over for cuddle opportunities and chances to just remind them how much they are loved.

I took the time to call friends that had been on my mind to call but who managed to somehow get pushed to the "it's too late" realm by the demands of an active life. Just to check in. Just to connect. Just because.

This afternoon's sendoff of Steve to work took a little longer than usual. The WDA demanded just one more "goodbye" pet; my kiss was a little deeper.

When Michael got home from school he was greeted with a heartier chorus of welcome than normal; so much more vocal that he worried that the Army was mad at him. He did not understand their joy for no apparent reason.

The reality of life's fragility is something we humans try to ignore or keep buried deeply. I truly believe my White Dogs are wiser by far in understanding the necessity of living in the moment that is now. It is a concept I struggle with as I plan for the weekend; finish our late taxes; fuss over the ever-growing to-do list. Taking time to sit with White Dog and watch sunset is sometimes traded away for an extra half hour "to get things done."

Today my White Ones, each and every one, were there to school me in staying focused...and to remind me of the power of our family. Join me in taking a little extra time today to reach out to a friend, to watch the stars come out, to hug your loved ones tight...to remember that right now is all any of us is promised.
