May 9, 2013

White Dog and the others came in one-by-one to sit around me and stare. "What?" I finally asked, unnerved by the six pairs of eyes gazing as I worked. "You have had treats, tummy rubs, brushings. What have I neglected?"

White Dog asked to come up in my lap. "We are not here because we need anything, momma. We all came in because it is so amazing watching you as you make your dream come true. It makes us all so happy and proud and hopeful."

I was working on the final paperwork for Sunday's meeting. We got our certificate from the state last week and the other day we met with our CPA. We are nearly there.

Some may recall early in Spring when I became a whistle blower and left the cancer organization I worked tirelessly for when I discovered financial improprieties and the fact that only eighteen cents of every dollar was going to research. We, my incredible supporters and on the ground team here in Albuquerque, prepared to join another organization but were told there was no room for those who called out others. We were given a 24-hour choice of publicly apologizing and giving the organization administrative rights to this blog so that they could eliminate anything they did not like. The WDA refused to surrender our blog and I refused to apologize for the truth.

The White Dogs and I hate cancer. We have lost too many we love too horribly and too soon to just give up. After much consideration, and the amazing encouragement of every single person we talked with, Steve and I decided to underwrite the start-up of our own charitable organization that will focus on raising awareness and funds for comparative research, studies that will be bridges to cures in catastrophic illnesses (cancer, yes, but also dementia, seizures, aging, diabetes, obesity and a host of others) for both two- and four-leggeds.

The paperwork is official; we are legally incorporated in our state and are in the process of obtaining a 501c3 status from the IRS. Over and over again during this process former business sponsors and volunteers have come to us pledging to continue walking beside us. It has made our hearts swell as so many have said, "We believe in you and in what you are doing; we trust you." On Sunday, we will meet to officially create a Board of Directors (all just as excited and driven as the WDA is) and to approve a charter that resolves our commitment to a goal of eighty cents of every dollar going to research and establishes a minimum of not less than fifty. It is lofty, yes, but if we are truly going to do battle to end these horrific diseases we must be fully dedicated to getting the dollars where they will become leaps forward, and eureka connection moments, and finally, cures.

Our focus will initially continue our work in comparative oncology, for there is work there that we would like to see fostered. We will share this new journey here as we receive our IRS approval and chart our course. Right now, The White Dogs and I ask that you share our excitement about a David organization in a land of fast-shuffling Goliaths that WILL, we can promise that, make a difference.

You, our blog family, have always been there (you give us strength and courage) and we are counting you will Walk with us still under this new banner, that is ours, that is devotedly full of hope, that is honest, that is for every blogger who has lost a loved one to the monsters...
