June 27, 2013

White Dog laid in a swoon on the fainting couch. The rest of the White Dog Army was sprawled across the living room, bodies turned to maximize the cool air from the swamp cooler and the breeze from the ceiling fan. It was 102 degrees F and no one was inclined to move a muscle...not even for treats. It was too hot to even be crabby or impatient, the WDA adopted a very Jimmy Buffett attitude as they stayed VERY still and daydreamed...
Steve had to beg the Army to run out en masse for an afternoon potty break and he laughed that there was a traffic jam at the bottom of the ramp...where everyone wanted to take care of business and turn quickly around to go in.

Inadvertently we chose a tough day to test Puff's progress by allowing her to stay free-roaming all day without the aid of oxygen. She slept a lot, as did the others, but there has been no coughing or strained breathing. She has enjoyed the freedom and the swirl of air stirred up by our happy dance. We will not push our luck, though, tonight she will sleep in the oxygen kennel.

As it nears bedtime and the thermometer still reads 99 degrees F, we debate the wisdom of cancelling tonight's pre-bedtime walks...at least for some of the WDA. Puff certainly is not going to be allowed to exert herself in the heat; nor Quinn. With Nuka and Oso's snail slow walking pace I worry about them, too, especially since the pavement has barely had chance to cool off from the day. White Dog and YoYoMa, walk partners, are both bursting with unspent energy. Steve may venture out with them for a short brisk tour of the neighborhood. With them I am not worried, if conditions are anything less than perfect my diva, the White Dog, will simply refuse to go further and will insist upon immediately returning home.

Between the high temperatures and our driest year in decades, New Mexico is a tinderbox and we are all anxiously holding our breaths as we all dream of cool drenching quenching invigorating water falling from the sky. Stay cool.

We've had a very dry year as well, and it was 90 at 9:00 pm. You gotta love the swamp cooler. Otto adds, "and the tile floor!"

Please stay as cool as possible because that is hot. I wish I could give you some of our cooling rain as that is the norm here at the moment. I was happy to read that your sweet one went without oxygen during the day. Keep cool friends. Hugs GJ x
