White Dog woke me to greet the day. I sat up to the faces of YoYoMa, Bella, Puff, and Taiko peering over the top of the bed. White Dog cleared her throat.

"We know that today might be one you would rather not think about, momma, but WE want you to know you are the absolute best momma in the Universe," she began. "And Oso and Quinn and Nuka agree."

Tears started rolling down my cheeks.

"The best moms," Puff continued, "are those who are always there, never putting themselves first. You are there in the middle of the night when you hear a sound from one of us that isn't right. You give up going out to dinner to take us to the vet when we are sick. You use the money you were saving to buy us treats to cheer us up."

"Momma, you are our treasure. We all know we can count on you to stop whatever you are doing to listen to us or to stroke our faces and tell us how much you love us," Taiko said. "You always make me feel like the most important thing in your life."

Bella spoke, "You make me feel safe. I know loud noises or strong winds or crazy kids will not hurt me because you are there to hold me and protect me and to whisper courage in my ear. When you are near, I believe that I can do anything."

"We know, momma,, that what you do for us leaves scars on your heart and sometimes makes you cry." YoYoMa quietly continued. "The pain you feel over Oso's end days and the amazing care you gave Quinn when his seizures were overwhelming fill us with understanding that you will never abandon us to protect your heart or because we become inconvenient."

"You pamper us and have made us into a family and we are blessed in every way imaginable. Today, we want you to know," White Dog finished as she lay across my lap, " how very much you are loved and appreciated. Without you, there would be no White Dog Army; without you the world would be somehow less."

"Happy Mother's Day!" the WDA finished in unison as Steve called from the kitchen, "Who is ready for a special celebration breakfast? We have strawberries and omelette's and almond croissants...and BACON!"

The room emptied. I wish all the four- and two-legged moms a Mother's Day filled love and appreciation and a family moment of celebration.

That was beautifully written. Thanks for being the best dog mom I have the honor to call my friend. :)

I just read about Oso's passing. I wish there were words of comfort, but there never really are. There are actions of comfort, though, and your family is providing them. Godspeed, Oso.

Happy mother's day, Mom. I'm sorry I missed a lot of the WDA events. I know all of this is true. They had better lives because of you-- although I think Siku would beg to differ. I'm sure she's thinking that you had a better life because of her.
