White Dog and the White Dog Army spent the early part of the day in quiet contemplation, in closeness, as we balmed our grief and sought to understand the rapid-fire events of our past three days.
"Darby was like a meteor who streaked through our lives," I commented. The WDA, with its much greater understanding and acceptance of the cycle of life reminded me, "That was all the time she needed to feel our love and safety. Once she knew we would remember her and be with her as she started her Journey, it was time for her to cross the Bridge."
"It was the same with Jupiter. She had a mission to transition Candace and her family into our lives and their new beginning," YoYoMa explained. "And when she saw that they would be fine on their own, she left us."
"You and Taiko are missing the important point," Puff added as she gently cradled her head against Tai's face. He, like me, was struggling, with losing his new friend so quickly. "It is about love. We should be celebrating not hanging our heads low. Darby came here to find SOMEONE who wanted her and loved her. And because of you, brother, and every one of us, she instantly knew that she had found a family that welcomed, respected and loved her unconditionally. It was our love that gave her the peace and courage to let go. It was her time."
The WDA sat silently, thinking about Puff's words. Then White Dog spoke, "She is right. We need to celebrate the power of love...a real White Dog Army celebration! Momma, turn on some music! The Planets would be perfect to start. We need treats, Darby never even got a taste of duck jerky. And lets make dinner extra-special, Jupiter LOVED to eat and Darby only got to enjoy chicken broth and rice. Can we do that?"
I nodded. Sachi jumped up and dug at my knee until I turned full attention to him. "And a heart cake, too? With cream cheese and red sprinkles. Please?"
White Dog was already sitting in the kitchen by the pantry before I even got up.
