March 28, 2017

White Dog held the rest of the White Dog Army at full stay as Steve brought in the freshly bathed and dried body and laid it on the shroud spread on the bedtop. I kissed her head and softly stroked her cheek. "Be at peace Anya," I whispered. "Know you are one of us forever and that you are loved and cherished always. You were a joy and a blessing." With that, Steve took off Anya's collar and tags and we wrapped her in the blanket.

The White Dogs each came forward to sniff and say their messages of Godspeed; all then followed us as we carried her to the van for her final ride.

Anya did not make it through the night. She suffered a massive hemorrhage and was gone. I held her right before bedtime. She and I spoke our last thoughts to each other and I knew then that the morning would dawn without color or song. And sure enough, it was raining.

We are this day, together trying to understand that which can not really be understood and trying to figure out how to turn our feelings of grief into a celebration of our spunky little girl with so many challenges who calmly walked into our hearts and changed us.

Always, Anya Marie Sehi-Smith, Curious White Dog (CWD) and peace. We know you have been met by your angel siblings of the heavenly White Dog Army waiting with fresh salmon and welcomes.

we are so very very sorry.....mom is off looking for a tissue. Adopting these senior dogs - knowing their time may be short - is such a wonderful blessing and gift to those that may otherwise go unloved. YOU ALL are remarkable for doing what you do with no thought to future heartbreak.... Safe Journey Anya - you were well loved. PURRS

To some it may not seem like it but we dog people know - you did so much for sweet Anya just by bringing her into your home. You gave her the love, comfort and a home. You gave her the attention she so deserved. And she knew what she had - that's why she fought to stay with you two and the WDA. Sometimes though the body wins and cannot go on anymore on this earth.

Dear Anya - you were loved on earth and you are going to be loved again over the Rainbow Bridge where my sweet Shiloh boy and all the other furangels awaited your arrival with great anticipation. You will be missed here on earth.

Few of us have the strength to do what you do, but then we are not rewarded with the unconditional love, or the knowledge that we've given the greatest five we have to another being- companionship and love. Thank you for making sure this special doggy knew both and that her memories will be those if happy times spent with the ines who chose her to love. Previous indeed. Godspeed little doggy.

Something a friend wrote for me that I included in a chapter on grief in one of my books. I hope the words bring you comfort. We are so very sorry for this loss. LB Johnson family with Abby the Rescue Lab.

When I was 18, and lost my lifelong companion, Sally - with me since birth, a small black and white cocker mix, my best and sometimes only friend, my soul-mate. She loved me, I believe, more perfectly than I could ever have loved her in my inexperience. When she was 18 she died and I grieved and I cried and I still get tears in my eyes when I think of that sweet little soul who gave me so much. So, no, you never get over it, I do not know anyone who has loved a dog and has said goodbye that gets over it. The pain? As you know, it eases, it becomes sweet memory with time, you still get tears in your eyes, but the smiles and laughter at the remembered fun and antics of your 4-legged Pal returns to you.

My mother is part Iroquois, and although a lifelong Catholic, carried with her some of the mythology handed down in her family. She knew my grief was raw and painful and that only time would help heal the wound in my heart. She said to me ‘Sally walks with you, and with time, she will allow you to feel her there beside you. During the first time of grief, you are blind to her, and that is as it should be, so she will know she is no longer in This World, but now walks in the Spirit World. When you are ready, she will help ease your pain by showing you memories, and helping you laugh again when you are ready to see that she is not lost to you, but always remains a part of you. Your tears will then be tears of joy at your good fortune at having known such a one."

I don't know if this will come out alright but its my belief that animals give up their lives when they are "ready" and Anya felt loved enough at your home, and in your arms to know it was alright to say good bye to you both and your pup family too. A tribute to the White Dog Army!
