White Dog oversaw the opening of the package and then begged, "read it to us, momma," as she called the White Dog Army to gather around.
Our wonderfully thoughtful friends in Atlanta, Sally Ann and Andy (along with their hu-mommy, Lisa), sent us a very special present that they promised would help make Benson's passing hurt a little less.
Amazon must have understood how important their gift was because it was delivered to our house on Sunday. Inside the box was a book, Dog Heaven.
Steve looked up a review. "In Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant's classic bestseller, the author comforts readers young and old who have lost a dog Recommended highly by pet lovers around the world, DOG HEAVEN not only comforts but also brings a tear to anyone who is devoted to a pet. From expansive fields where dogs can run and run to delicious biscuits no dog can resist, Rylant paints a warm and affectionate picture of the ideal place God would, of course, create for man's best friend. The first picture book illustrated by the author, Dog Heaven is enhanced by Rylant's bright, bold paintings that perfectly capture an afterlife sure to bring solace to anyone who is grieving."
We handed out jerky and everyone settled down to hear the story. "You are going to cry, aren't you, momma?" Bella asked in a very concerned tone. "You KNOW she will," YoYoMa replied, "and she might not be the only one." "Maybe we ought not read it if we will be sad," Sachi suggested.
"Our friends sent this to make us feel better. That does not mean we might not shed some tears but I think we will all appreciate the book. Please, momma read to us." And WD jumped up to sit behind me.
There were some tears but the story made us happy to think Benson was free from pain in a beautiful place where he could watch over us. "I DO still miss him SO much," Nilla softly said. "Sweet girl," I told her as Steve lifted her into his arms. "We ALL do."
