White Dog slept soundly, thanks mostly to the carprofen Dr. Julia has given her for pain relief. At breakfast, her first bites were tentative until she discovered that the cottage cheese and minced chicken concoction that Steve had put together required no chewing but tasted pretty darned wonderful.
After, the pain medication took effect and My Girl slept next to me for most of the day.
At White Dog Army afternoon treat time I had hoped we would all sneak out into the living room, leaving the Queen resting comfortably but she was one of the first to politely sit and ask for duck jerky. "Sweet Love, I think you might be pressing things with chewy jerky. Dr. Julia said soft things only for four days. We do not want to tear open anything that will bleed." I picked her up and she helped me give out pieces to the others.
As we finished I whispered in her ear, "A friend sent us a special recipe that she thinks you would truly enjoy. Feel like cooking with me?" I brought her into the kitchen where Nilla was gated so it was just the three of us (and Nilla was fast asleep). "Nope," I told the others, "White Dog and I are going to try a perfect for dental healing mash. If it works and WD says so, we will share a bite or two with each of you." White Dog hopped up on the cooking bench next to me.
"OK we are going to need eggs, some apple juice, some water, the ginger infused oil, and teeny tiny pasta. Sound interesting?" She wagged that we ought to get cooking.
We got the juice and water simmering then added the datillini. We cooked it until the noodles were starting to get almost too soft. Then we beat eggs until they were fluffy. "Eggs sound like a good idea," White Dog approved.
A splash of ginger infused olive oil got stirred into the pot; the house smelled wonderful. Then we whisked the eggs into the mix...kind of like egg drop soup. "Butter on top, please," White Dog asked. "You must have read Barb's note," I told her. "YES, butter...and a little cinnamon on top with nutmeg." "It smells like apple pie," she said. "Can we have ala mode?"
"Let's try a little bit without to see how it goes. Should we share bites?"
White Dog looked past the gate into the living room full of pleading Army eyes. "If we do will there still be enough for my dinner?" I looked into the saucepan. "Yes, remember you are eating smaller meals for now." "Then let's all give it a try."
It was a hit! Every pup, including White Dog, who CAN be picky, lapped up their samples. Even I enjoyed a taste. "Gee, sister," Zsofia wooed, "eating like this could almost make a pup glad for the dental stuff." Bella yipped for her to be nice. "I just meant,,," Zso was stressed that her comment had been misunderstood.
I wrapped my arm around White Dog. "How about for dinner we add a splash of cream before the butter and spices...sort of like ala mode?" White Dog nodded and looked at the clock.
