White Dog struggled to crawl out of my arms and ran to her bed in the office. Steve saw the hurt look on my face and followed after her.

I heard him ask her if she knew that she had hurt my feelings. "I don't want momma to know how scared I am about the vet visit and dental tomorrow," she answered. "She will be disappointed in me. Or worse yet, it will make her scared, too."

"Believe me," Steve told her. I could tell he was lifting her into his arms. "Momma is already plenty worried about why you have stopped eating and the whole idea of you being gone from her all day. I am certain she will not sleep well tonight worrying and will not breathe easily until you are done, back home, and she has talked to Dr. Julia. I will tell you what I told her. Dr. Julia has known you your whole life and she is brilliant. If she thinks your teeth might be hurting then lets trust her and see. We want you to feel better and enjoy eating again. You will be fine. And momma will insist on sending you off with hugs and love and all of her amazing strength. We will ALL be with you in spirit."
