White Dog was lying across Steve's lap enjoying a soft brushing when Diva and Zsofia, in working with momma, lifted their heads to Steve's, "Sue? I don't know what just happened." He carried the Little White Dog of My Heart in to me and placed her in my arms.
Vertically, on the side of her neck a flap of skin and fur fell back from a line that was irritatedly raw pink. I was alarmed there was no blood rather it was as if her skin had become delaminated. And she was almost hot to the touch.
Trying to puzzle things out we reviewed the day. White Dog had been unusually warm all morning and fussy. Steve noticed her ear was pink; "I don't see any gunk inside but it is certainly pink outside; I hope she is not developing an earache.."
Dr. Julia had already left for the day but Jackie thankfully told us to bring White Dog over right away. Rosie, Dr. Julia's experienced surgical nurse would see My Girl and start whatever needed to be done as directed by Dr. Julia, contacted by phone. We all agreed that White Dog, who is fast approaching 17, should be treated quickly lest the infection take hold in her elderly system.
White Dog was given a thorough physical exam and the open area irrigated before receiving a shot of Covenia, a fast-acting antibiotic that lasts for two weeks. Rosie and our vet believe White Dog has a bacterial skin infection in the layers under the surface. The flap was reattached over the raw underlayers to prevent damage to the tender new growth. The disposable stitches and antibiotic will get her started fighting the infection. We will talk with Dr. Julia tomorrow.
The sedative and Covenia left White Dog groggy but still willing to eat her dinner AND ice cream. Hopefully, we are on the road to recovery.
