White Dog motioned toward Roman. "I think all of the booms and exploding firecrackers are making him nervous," she said. "I know, Sweet Girl, and the holiday isn't for a week yet. By then at this rate it will feel like we are on a battlefield."
For some reason, maybe the boredom from lockdown, people have been setting off fireworks for nearly two weeks and it shows no signs of lessening. Half of the White Dog Army are uncomfortable with the noises and smell but Roman is absolutely traumatized. We try to distract the Army with closing the blinds and shutting doors. We play soothing music loudly to drown the sounds from outside. And when it becomes overwhelming we distribute calming herbal tablets.

Between Steve and myself we can accommodate everyone's need to be close and touch us. There are enough soothing words and gentle pets to go around. What we DON'T have are answers to their sad questioning eyes wanting to know WHY they are tormented so.

"Don't think about OUT there," I tell them. "Think about being safe and inside and surrounded by love. It is only noise...and we are stronger than that."
