White Dog disappeared. Then so did. Roman has left the room long ago. When Opal tried to sneak out, I had to ask. "Hey, where is everyone going?"
Opal looked guilty that she was leaving momma unattended but blurted out, "Dad is making Garbage Soup and he needs supervisors to decide what goes in it."
Cooking for two humans often leaves us with dibs and dabs of food left over or bits not used. We are trying harder to reduce waste and to creatively recycle leftovers into new meals.
Steve had the stockpot on the range with vegetable broth he had found in the freezer. He mixed in a bit of chicken broth and rice leftovers. The entire WDA clustered around the open refrigerator door.
"Is that some ground duck?" White Dog exclaimed. "We better use the extras you made when we had duck tacos the other night. In it goes."
"Do you want me to go through the garbage," Tizenegy seriously asked. "You know how good I am at finding edible stuff out on walks." Bella took him aside and explained the concept again. "Garbage is just a term. Think LEFTOVERS soup."
"Bailey had to put the container down to speak, "There is half a container of portabellas. Mushrooms and duck are a god match."
"Score! If we don't use that broccoli it will get limp," Opal said, but by the time all the chefs shared "tree" samples, the bag was empty. "Carrots," she said brightly without losing a beat. "Adds color AND vitamins. Dad, chop these in."
"Spinach! Soup always loves spinach...and so do we." Steve grabbed the net bag before Zso could hand out samples. "Sorry, if you want it in the soup, there is not enough for tastes now."
Every pup looked up at the sound of a can rolling across the floor. Roman smiled from where he had pushed it off the pantry shelf. "Chickpeas. We need chickpeas."
Steve stirred the pot. "Oh, this is going to be a great meal." He looked at White Dog. "Some fennel pollen for seasoning," he asked. She nodded. "And sprinkle the top with grated romano, there is a wedge in the back of the cheese drawer," Pearl decreed.
There was not a drop left in a single bowl after dinner. And the pot was empty. "How about cookie crumbs from the bottom of the peanut butter cookie bag on top of the remaining yogurt...maybe with a dab of raspberry jam?" was Steve suggestion and the WDA rushed out to the kitchen again to stand at the refrigerator door and direct.

Wow, WDA! You all did such a great job of supervising. That soup sounds like it was delicious!
