White Dog stood in the doorway to the darkened living room just before human "lights out" and long after she is usually asleep. She looked at me like something wasn't right. And then walked a few steps into the other room. She came back to stand in the doorway to the office where her sleeping place is but still seemed troubled.
I was tucked into bed and settled before I registered what was happening. "Steve, please go get White Dog and bring her to me," I pleaded as I sat up and waited. It was his turn to be puzzled. "You will understand in a moment. I am sometimes so dense."
White Dog in my arms (Steve reported that she was just standing in the middle of the room looking at her empty bed when he retrieved her), I gently kissed her and wrapped my arms around her.
"Little White Dog of My Heart, you are looking for Pearl, aren't you? She always slept next to your bed and sometimes even closer. Now she is not here and is nowhere to be found...not even in her watching chair. You miss the comfort of being together at night.
"Sweet One, remember that night when Pearl woke up and was so horribly sick and dad rushed her to the hospital? She fought hard and so did the vet but her body stopped working. Dad brought Pearl's spirit home to be with the ones who love her and needed to find closure...and if you open your heart you can feel her right beside you. She really tried to come home to say goodbye but it just was not to be. We all miss her lots and lots and will for a long long time."
I slowly stroked My Girl. "Would it help you sleep if dad put Pearl's special Heart Blanket in your bed? It was the vision blanket Nancy made when we discovered how much Pearl missed her babies; Pearl cherished that gift. It smells like her and holds lots of her energy.
"You can lie against it, nest in it, cry into it. And Baby Girl do not be afraid or ashamed to grieve out loud. We are all struggling at times and will understand.
"Now dad will tuck you in; it is late. Love is forever...and I DO know Pearl loved you and the entire White Dog Army with all of her heart."

You have helped me understand why Teka uses the “Gus Bed” as her refuge. Thank you once again for sharing you wisdom
