White Dog was fussing; the others had eaten and Steve was just finishing assembling her babyfood slurry, along with the syringe of medications she takes with dinner. It, on one level, makes us happy when she is hungry enough to complain but, on another, it makes everyone worry that there is truly something wrong.
Roman does not like the sounds of unhappiness made by his sisters sometimes. It makes him nervous enough to put distance between himself and the White Dog in distress; sometimes he goes outside or into his kennel...or he presses against my leg to alert me to make it stop.
Tonight, however, Roman surprised us all by walking over to where White Dog rested on her living room bed. He stood over her concerned. He sniffed the bed and stood thinking. Then he dipped his head, gave her flank a quick brush of comfort, and sat down to watch over her.
At no point was his posture threatening so this momma did not have to will herself to restart breathing before holding my arms open to him and saying, "Roman, you caring boy! That was so gentle and kind. Dad is going to help White Dog eat now and she will be fine. You are SUCH a good boy!"
