"Dad has been gone a long time," Opal said to Zsofia. "He was going to vote," Zsofia explained. "But it does seem to be a while since he left. He did promise to bring back a Voting Day treat maybe that is what is keeping him."
Steve returned and told us of the long lines at the polling place that stretched outside the building where it was hot and at some points, shadeless. "Most folks were wearing masks," he reassured us. "Things were creeping along and some guy came out to announce that the polling station several blocks away was absolutely empty. Since it is closer to the house anyway I left the line and drove over to the one on Zuni. Here's my 'IVoted' sticker."
The White Dog Army had lost interet in the vting story as they sniffed the bag he was carrying. "You remembered!" Lilly cried causing the others to crowd nearer hoping to be sure to get whatever it was. "Momma first," he told them, "her lunch is very late. I hope a Cobb salad works. "he called to me. "And for my very patient Army who watched over omma and the house I have chicken tenders to share."
