It is a matter of mastering subtle signals that are often not even conscious...for both the Army AND for the momma. Movement in my peripheral vision distracts my focus of simply staying upright while creeping forward, for example. At those moments of vulnerability the members in the pack through millions of exchanges instinctively know to allow lots of space outside of my path (should I fall) and to sit, or lie down.
Lilly is still processing our house rules. She is interested in learning but does not yet always understand why momma does not want her help or to take that particular opportunity for kisses. Generally, I make an announcement to the room, like "OK, I am going to the commode so I need you all to wait for me to transfer." This is reinforced with my single pointer finger raised to signal "Wait.". As we are still training Lilly, Steve positions himself so that I can hold on to him but that he can body block her if necessary. Even Roman sets a perfect example to follow.
Today, I almost distracted myself. I gave the command to Lilly that I was going to move and that she must wait...and she immediately moved steps away from me and laid down in the doorway. And she stayed until I was transferred and released everyone present by telling all that they were "Good Girls."
Progress. "Lilly Bean," I rubbed my hands over her ears, "that was a VERY good job. Keep up the good work."

That is some wonderful progress, indeed. Well done, Lilly. XO
