"I am frightened," Opal said as she cradled into the safety of a crate and buried her head in Roman's blanket. I spoke to her gently. "Sweetheart, think back...it may seem impossibly long ago...we have done this before; it was our regular routine."
We had run out of luck. Steve's leadership at the architecture firm had mandated a physical return to the office for 16 hours of the workweek. How that time was structured was, with the exception of staff meeting times, left to the individual but it had to be codified.
This news sent huge ripples through our family. Steve had worked from home for nearly three years and the routine was well established. Now we were faced with changing WDA breakfasts, a most important point, and my health constraints.
We decided on five days a week from 9am until noon. His office is 10 minutes from home and part of the understanding with the senior partners is that he will take phone calls from us no matter what he is involved with at the office. The WDA is very nervous about this change and I worry that I alone cannot intervene should an emergency arise.
I pick Opal up and hug her tightly next to me. "Let's be brave together, Sweet Girl. Believe in us. Let us see what tomorrow holds. If we need him dad will fly to our side; give us all a chance and don't make dad feel stress or guilt doing what he must."
