White Dog, in the old days would sniff a bit and "help" with the organizing for a while while we wrapped presents but then was content to sit beside me or on the couch and watch things progress. Foolishly, in retrospect, we thought having four White Dogs would be just like that...only with four times as many "watchers."
Tonight, with shipping deadlines looming large, we dedicated our after dinner time to the Santa's Workshop tasks of sorting and wrapping and labeling gifts. First, we waited and waited as Michael stalled, suddenly wanting to "hang out," his curiosity getting the best of him. Finally, he retired to his room and we started pulling out items to be swathed in colorful paper and ribbon.
Rolls of wrapping paper were leaned against the chair...until Another White Dog felt the need to see them roll. Those air pillows for packing were in a neat pile next to the coffee table...until Puff and Nuka and Quinn decided it would be fun to parade around and around the table dragging the string of plastic behind them. Finished gifts were set in a nice neat stack to be stored when we finished...but AWD felt the need to check that the contents were ok after the trauma of wrapping so she ripped them open. TOWD rejected the nice new dense foam camping mat we bought for him to lay on, preferring to plant himself on top of the tissue paper.
Both Steve and I looked up at White Dog's gentle "Woof" directing our attention to Still Another White Dog who was stealthily stealing off with Jesse's snowmen socks. When Steve went out on the deck to claim them back, he found our little Klepto had also purloined an herbal calming sachet and a kitty toy. (All are safely in and dusted off and wrapped...hopefully the recipients will not notice the little teeth prints or the doggy drool on them)!
During all of this White Dog stretched out on the couch, supervising a little and doing some post dinner pre-bed napping. Our time was up for the evening but as we cleaned up, we both agreed that tomorrow night we will gate everyone (except White Dog) in the kitchen where they can watch but will not be underfoot. Slowly, very slowly, we humans are starting to think "Pack!"
