White Dog and the rest of the White Dog Army were surprised when Steve showed up at lunchtime. They gathered around him as normal but they were panting from the heat. "It seems warmer than normal in the house," Steve observed, and the pups all wagged their tails in agreement. He promised that when he returned home he would go up on the roof and make sure the evaporative cooler was functioning correctly.

White Dog rode with Steve after work to the hardware store. Their pre-roof discussion evolved a strategy that the water pads (which get clogged and yucky) would be replaced even if nothing was wrong with the system. This would improve the airflow through the water saturated pads sending more cooling air into the house. The replacement pads were sniffed and approved by TOWD, AWD, SAWD and YAWD upon their return. By then a slight breeze had kicked up and the skies clouded, making it possible to consider shutting off the cooling system for the half hour or so it would take Steve to fuss; and making it bearable for him to be on the roof.

Quinn was appointed safety supervisor and stood at the bottom of the ladder. Nuka and Puff sat at the far end of the yard where they could see Steve up on the roof. YoYoMa was put in charge of watching over the inside of the house. White Dog paced between all of the action and coordinated the group.

About midway through the change-out operation White Dog trotted in to announce that the water nozzles were partially clogged and that only a small stream of water was hitting the pads. Steve would have to clean those out.

YoYoMa went to the dog door to report that it was starting to get overly warm in the house. WD moved to the ladder to share the news with Steve but he was already coming down. He turned the circuit back on and the swamp cooler whirred to life. WD and the other White Ones charged back in; Steve joined them. Everyone sat directly in front of the living room duct and waited. In seconds air started flowing out...it was cool (cooler than it had been)...the breeze was strong...relief was almost instantaneous.

Everyone congratulated each other for a job well done. Cool drinks were shared. No one panted. Thoughts turned to dinner.

That is quite a strategy who have going being able to work in such harmony. We are all so glad you were able to coordinate the situation and with Micheal assistance are able to stay cool in this crazy heat! Cheers!

It stinks when there's no air conditioning in the heat! My mommy has been there a few times, and without power too! Once for more than 3 weeks (thanks to a hurricane).

I'm glad you finally have some relief! Sending lotsa woofs & hugs to you all! :)

Now that's the perfect example of terrorific team work. (Wish me and brudder Max (DaOdderWeenie) could work dat good togedder. Butt.......

Note From Mom....Thank you so much for your kind comment on Amber's last post about Tucker. We are all still in shock over the sudden appearance of lung cancer in our little man. Right now all we can think about is making him feel loved and keeping him comfortable. I'm sure later on we'll be shell-shocked when his bills start rolling in, but right now I just have to concentrate on keeping him pain-free so he can enjoy the time he has left with us. Everything else will be worked out later on and we'll be OK. You, the WDA, and our other friends in Blogville have been wonderful and we all thank you for the love and support we are feeling at this sad time.

Hugs

Hooray for Steve, the cooler and the Army for accomplishing some cooling. We are at 95 today, using fan power only. But tonight it is supposed to go into the 60s!
Wahoo if it does!

Kisses,
Stella

Thank dogness Steve could come home for lunch:) We don't think we would be able to last long here without our cooling air. Mom says we would have to get in the minivan and just drive and keep buying gas - she needs that a/c too.

Hope the system stays cooling you well.

Nice work, white dogs!

Thanks so much for your beautiful message for Sweet Pea. We are treasuring every moment together. Mama and Sweet Pea have been together for 20 years! Can you imagine? Sweet Pea was found as a kitten in a dumpster on the west side over near University of Illinois. Since you are a former Chicagoan thought you might find that interesting. Thanks again for your kindness and lovely words.

Your pal, Pip
