White Dog and The White Dog Army tried to block the door to prevent Steve from leaving for work this afternoon, but he (for the twelfth time) patted each on the head and then led them (like the Pied Piper) around the coffee table in a line...right to the front door where he slipped out. To take away the sting of being tricked on Too Late Tuesday, I gave everyone an extra ration of duck jerky.

"Where are all of the dogs?" Michael asked a bit later. "I don't know. Outside?" He went and looked out the patio door. "They are all in the back of the yard. White Dog and YoYoMa are barking and jumping at the wall and Nuka and Quinn are laying down. Oh, Puff is pacing up on the deck. What do you think that means?" "I don't know," I said and continued keyboarding, "why don't you go see?"

He came in a few minutes later with his report. "They are barking at the cat on the top of the wall who I think is trying to get a bird. Nuka and Quinn are kinda protecting the bird who is on the ground and might be hurt, I think. Puff is growling, I think at the cat. I tried to chase the cat away but it would not move and when I threw a stick at it, he just moved up into the tree."

I hit "save" and stood up. "Let's go see what we can do." Puff ran to my side the minute we walked out onto the deck, obviously upset. We all went to see what was going on at the back of the yard.

White Dog, YoYoMa, and now Quinn were beneath the tree that held the angry and hissing Tortie girl from across the street. The WDA was answering her challenge with low-throated threats of their own and things seems a standoff. "You know you shouldn't throw things at animals," I reminded Michael.

Nuka was still curled in the dirt in a protective position, her back to me. She started when I touched her and then jumped up. "The bird is gone!" Michael shouted. "I hope the cat didn't eat it!" "Really? Do you think even THAT cat would be brave enough to climb down past White Dog and Quinn, skirt around YoYo and then sneak past Nuka?" "But Yo is blind and Nuka's deaf," Michael still worried. "Well, the cat doesn't know that!"

"I think the bird might have been acting injured to lure the cat away from her nest and the WDA came to HER rescue. All are fine, I am pretty sure." "How sure?" "Let's just say that I am pretty confident, now let's go inside and have reward treats and a snack." "And the cat? No treats for the cat, she has bad manners!"

Hmmmmm...that cat needs a talking to at the least! Poor bird probably didn't know which way to go. All sounds well though.

Whew! That was a lot of excitement for the day. We think we could be convinced to leave the bird alone for some duck jerky:)
