April 6, 2012

White Dog sat with me as I tried to sort out our Friday-Is-Saturday. As usual, we had planned a day around the White Dog Army, visiting their favorite pet store for treats, going to the Park to do a bit of duck stalking, taking a long walk, stopping for lunch.

I was still nervous about Quinn and YoYoMa. They had no issues after yesterday afternoon but there still seemed to be an underlying current that concerned me. Call it my "momma spidey-sense." I worried about the two in close proximity in the van and had just about talked Steve and myself into leaving Quinn at home.

As we were strapping on harnesses and gathering leashes, Quinn came and stood by me, waiting for the others to finish dressing (he always wears his harness in case we need to help him stand or safely grab him). "What do you think, Mighty One? Want to stay home and have the house all to yourself and relax with some special treats?" He looked at me and moved to stand next to YoYoMa; both were focused on the door. I looked at Steve. "He is going to think he is being punished," Steve said. "All of them know we do things all together. The others will be weirded out that he is missing."

I held my breath for a second and gazed around the room at the Army. "We're all in this together, group. For better or worse, right? Please make it for better, OK?" With that and my nod Steve took Quinn and Nuka out and fastened their seatbelts on the way back seat. Next White Dog and Puff went out, followed by YoYoMa. For my own peace of mind, I attached a short 3' lead to his harness and held the end in case I should need to quickly react. YoYoMa settled into his place against the front seat.

It was a gorgeous day and we drove with the windows open. The WDA was a group in bliss, snooters up, wind blowing through their furs, eyes closed. I began to finally relax. WD represented the Army at the pet store and the rest of us waited patiently together in Pumpkin. All was good. The "fast ones"--White Dog, YoYoMa, and Puff--went first for their Park run then we waited by the ducks while "The Strollers"--Nuka and Quinn--did their tour and visit to the living webbed jerky.

Steve sat in the back and shared stuffed sopapillas for lunch. The WDA liked the puffy bread filled with hamburger; Steve opted for a bit more spice in the red chile sauced carne adovada. Everyone had perfect manners and there was no tension or hostility. When we got home I worried for a brief second about the logistics of getting everyone inside without leaving the two boys alone. But White Dog gently touched my hand to remind me to have faith in my pack.

I took a deep breath and gave myself over to trust.
