White Dog begged, "NOW can we post photos from the My Dog and Me Health Fair? Can we?" I reminded her that because we were working the room and doing presentations that there were no photos of The White Dog Army, but she didn't mind. "It was such a great day with so much learning and sharing. I want our Blog family to see we did them proud." I cannot ever refuse the Little White Dog of My Heart so, without further discussion, here are some special moments from Paws To People's first ever public Event (which we all count as a success)...My Dog and Me Health Fair:
We had food! Dragon and Sen-ge's dad provided people food.
The pups did not starve, either. Real alligator, crab and crayfish cookies made without wheat, corn or soy with no artificial ingredients kept true to the discussion on diet and avoiding fillers and artificial stuff.
Participants Shadow and Coco discuss Rachael's lecture about what makes good quality foods. Coco came to live with his mom just 3 days before the Fair and she had never had a dog before. She came to learn how to be a good dog mom.
Rachael tells us about the order of ingredients and how to intelligently read labels on dog food.
Dr. Breslin talked about dental health and showed us how to properly brush tooths. Did you know the enamel on dog teeth is only half as thick as a human's? When she suggested that kitty teeth should also be brushed every day, one attendee offered to bring her four cats to Dr. Breslin's office daily to see that happen. The crowd got quite a laugh.
Clay Chi and his dad knew all about the doggie dentist as he had recently broken a tooth. Ouch!
The WDA was VERY surprised when two Eskies  entered the room. One was very shy like Puff. Everyone joked saying, "We thought YOU owned all of the Eskies in town!"
Dr. Welcome told us about changing needs across the different stages of a dog's life, then spent some time talking about how to tell if you were having an emergency, what should be in your at home doggie first aid kit, and how to do some basic first aid. When he said the first rule was "Don't panic," there was LOTS of nervous laughter. He brought his terrier girl, Heidi as his assistant to demonstrate how to apply a bandaged...she was VERY patient.
Every one took LOTS of notes. One woman came up after and wanted to be sure we did not think she had been texting on her phone all afternoon...she had been writing notes on her notepad app!
Dr. Schrempp, an oncologist, talked about the c monster and how good health is the first best line of defense against serious disease. It is not a guarantee that you will not get sick, but if you do you will be better able to fight.
Michelle, followed by Rocky, led everyone for a walking break as part of her presentation on exercise.
Steve wove the day together with lead ins and slide shows and introductions.
Every one went home packed full of new insights and information as well a take bag filled with healthy goodies.
