White Dog came in from shopping. "You are a genius, momma!" she said. I looked at her, a little suspicious that I was about to be conned. "Letting dad have a little fun doing yard stuff was the BEST birthday present you could have given him. He is having a blast!"

Puff, who had also gone along, joined in with her sister. "You should have seen him pushing us in the cart down the rows of flowers, choosing this one, shaking his head at that one, asking us what we thought. Unchaining him from the computer and work for a little communing with nature is just what he needs."

What started as a little fix-it project to prevent a mud pit at the bottom of the ramp from the deck has bloomed into a 10x10' extension and general sprucing up. Since beginning his MBA classes, Steve has barely had time to breathe much less fill his creative soul or his need to be one with the Earth. He is nearing the end now; he graduates in December and soon will have only two classes remaining. His upcoming birthday next week and the chance to celebrate a bit has excited an urge to make our surroundings more festive, less utilitarian.

Sachi and Taiko were Steve's wingmen as they decided which plants went where. They chose to recycle the old barrel planters that had been destined for being broken apart and gotten rid of. Now both hold splashes of pink and red and blue. YoYoMa was called out to make sure the changes did not create navigation problems...after a couple of cautious circuits of the area, Yo was comfortable enough to trot after Bella's playful bark.

I would like to take credit for some grand scheme to get Steve into the sunshine and mud but to be fair, I think it was more the call of the wild (at least our urban version of it) and the encouraging yips of a certain group of White Dogs. I just get to reap the benefits.

Yay! He can now see the light at the end of the tunnel! Glad the WDA inspired him to get outside and do some gardening!

I just started my internship/student teaching year and can sympathize with Steve. I, too, have found projects to be therapeutic to the mind and soul. I have been organizing closets and cleaning up the basement of items we don't use so that they may be donated.
It feels good not to be tied to a computer for a bit. :)

we are glad Steve got some time outside with the WDA and that his school time has an end in sight :)

Mr. Steve certainly deserved his present. I think making a parcel of land beautiful is rewarding in its own right.

Great choice, Momma.
