White Dog looked Nilla over carefully. "Don't worry, sister. Nothing to worry about." And she sent our gentle matriarch for her followup exam by Dr. Julia.
Turns out WD was absolutely right; Nilla's nervousness was for naught. Dr. Julia declared her throat wound healed with only a small line of scar tissue. Furs were growing over the area nicely.
Running her hands over Our Girl's belly and back legs before taking a good look, our vet was happy to feel the smooth softness of downy new hairs. Steve held his baby, her back against his chest, to reveal no signs of redness or flakiness or irritation on the skin. It was clear and pink. "Let's finish up the bottle of antibiotics," Dr. Julia told her. "I know it is icky but you DO get treats after?" She looked at Steve for his confirming nod. "I want to make sure we kicked the infection and we will best know that when the fur fills in."
Addressing Nilla's back legs which were quivering from nervousness and exertion, the vet asked how often that happened. "Not frequently but more often than it used to be, but she IS going to be 19," Steve reminded. Dr. Julia smiled, "Getting old is not easy on any of us Sweet Girl. If she goes through a period of increased tremors let's try giving an extra gabapenten otherwise I think Nilla is good to go."
Steve grabbed our girl BEFORE she managed to jump off of the exam table. "Not so feisty, I know you are glad to be done." Dr. Julia had the last word, "Umm, maybe try to keep her OUT of Olympic events. Like you said she is an older girl."
