White Dog turnd to face the breezes from the swamp cooler vent. "I guess we each have our own way of dealing with the dog days of summer," she laughed looking into the yard.
"You will be so proud of me, White Dog. Listen to what I found out about that expression on the internet. I have been watching momma do research and have been practicing on my own topics," Opal said. The phrase ‘Dog Days Of Summer’ is used to talk about hot, sultry days. The expression 'dog days of summer' is celestial in origin. The term indicates a period between July 3 and August 11 when the Dog Star, Sirius, rises at the same time or near the same time as the sun in the Northern hemisphere. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius (known colloquially as the "Dog Star"), which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
From the yard, Zsofia sang. "The only mad dogs here will be the WDA if we don't get ice cream with dinner.

Do any members of the WDA like dust baths? We think that Zso. might like them. The dust seems to act as a protective layer between dog and heat. Our Nigel was a largish black dog who loved to go to the parks near home and roll in the dust. Gus tried it a couple of times, but it did not brus h off as easily as it did on Nigel? No ideas here, but it looked like fun.
Zso, you are so, so right! Ice cream for everyone! :)
