White Dog rested on her bed in the living room sniffing preparations taking place in the kitchen. Roman kept watch over the pumpkin custard in the oven.

Earlier in the day, the others had to be gated from the action because their over-enthusiastic demands to taste test every single ingredient in the cauliflower gratin and the spinach with four mushrooms tart. 

"You guys," Steve tried to reason with them. "You will sample us until there is nothing left for tomorrow."

"Carpe diem, dad!" was Opal's response.
