May 6, 2012

White Dog laughed when we picked up the phone early this morning and Candace's voice said, "tell me I wasn't dreaming." And yet when we rose for the day and opened up the house, each and every one of the Army went to the sunporch and checked the now empty puppy crate. Yes, it was true, Digby and Wolf found forever homes.

So we went to the hilly Park, our favorite, just for the joy of walking in the sunshine on the cool grass. We stopped at our favorite pet store and White Dog talked Steve into celebrating the day by buying bison spiral chews along with the kibble he had gone in to purchase.

Then we came home and made YoYoMa's donation, $30, to the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance. He sat next to me beaming as we hit the "Donate" button and left a note "from YoYoMa on the occasion of his First Gotcha Day to help other sightless dogs find loving forever homes."

We left the White Dog Army to nap and enjoy their chews while we ran some errands and met Candace and Gregg for lunch. When we came home it was spa time for Quinn and Nuka.

"Quinn first," I said, thinking that we would get the most difficult task accomplished first. Never a happy bather, he has become totally resistant since his seizure troubles began. I took a deep breath as Steve took off Quinn's harness and collar and lifted him into the tub. We recently purchased a handheld dog shower head with a long hose and fingertip controls that allow you to reach under and around and hold the water close so it doesn't splash and get in the eyes. Quinn stood quietly as Steve wet, soaped, and massaged his very dirty coat working on him until the water ran clear. I had the towel ready and was prepared to wrap him in it for a quick standing dry before he broke away and shook water everywhere.

I was surprised when Steve placed The Other White Dog in my arms and he didn't immediately jump down. Instead dripping wet Quinn snuggled into my arms like a fawn and rested his head on my shoulder. I wrapped the towel around him to blot the bath water...and my tears. This was the first time EVER that TOWD has allowed himself to be held in a lap unconnected to the floor or an escape route. He was trusting me. He just calmly laid in my arms while I finished toweling and Steve partially blow dried his fur. He took a treat without indicating he wanted down and ate it resting his head on my chest. Then he turned and looked at me and I thanked him for this wonderful unexpected gift as I gently returned him to the ground.

Not to be outdone, Nuka, went through the spa process like a champ. She sat patiently in my arms while Steve blow dried her AND combed out her coat. This is the girl who came to us with an all-over surgical shave because she was so matted; the girl they had to anesthetize to clip her nails. What a difference a forever home makes, right? Another White Dog even licked Steve's nose in thanks after her grooming and treat before she, too, hopped down and went outside to shake.

Not exciting. But nice. Just another White Dog Sunday.

We are just overjoyed to hear that the pups have forever homes, and how wonderful to know that they have found a great home. Kudos to all of you for a job well done.

Mom said she should probably tackle bathing us at home too, but she would need to get a good dryer. Right about now we all need a good warm bath to loosen all that dead fur and a good strong blower to feed it all to the birds. We bet you all look beautiful now. And Mom also had tears to read about Quinn and his special moment.

The part about Quinn relaxing into your arms brought tears to my eyes.

I'm very happy about about Wolf and Digby. I love the origin of their names. Do you follow "Wilf" from France? He had a brother named Digby who has crossed the bridge. So, they were "Wilf and Digby"... very similar. It made me smile.
