December 29, 2014

White Dog looked around the room. Every pup was happily engaged and Steve was reading...for fun. We spent a little time earlier crossing some things off of the "to-do" list and now in the long slanted rays of afternoon sun we had no agenda.

"It is really great now that dad finished his MBA and doesn't have to work any more," said Taiko as he rested his head along Steve's thigh. "Having him here with us all of the time is the way it should be."

Steve has been able to combine the holidays with vacation time that he has to use or lose to be home all but one day last week and every day until next Monday. It HAS been a delight to have him with us constantly and we have all marveled at the restorative effect of relaxation on him.

I did not have the heart to tell Taiko, Steve's special boy, that these golden afternoons and movie night evenings will give way in a few short days to our "regular" schedule of late teaching nights, office hours, and Saturday classes. White Dog started to respond to him but I softly touched her paw and she took my hint.

Taiko is such a sensitive soul, that if we clue him in on the rapidly approaching future, he will spend all of his time fretting and not enjoy the days that are left. Although it will be a bit of a shock, I think we will wait until Sunday night to discuss the return to normal.

I chuckled and WD looked at me. "I was just thinking how much Taiko's worrying away the present about some future issue is like me," I quietly told her. "And about how folks that do not know dogs and cats think you have no idea about the passage of time."
