White Dog has a nerve impingement that was diagnosed when she was a puppy. Dr. Julia suspects it might be congenital. For years My Girl took a holistic medicine, discus compositum, that was made right in Albuquerque by a German chemist/pharmacist. It worked wonders.
The pressure pharmaceutical companies were putting on the government to legislate these small businesses caused the owner to throw up his hands in frustration, shutdown manufacturing, and return to Europe which has a more favorable acceptance of holistic healing.
Discus compositum became more expensive as we had to purchase it in the Netherlands and import it for White Dog's use. US Customs was not consistent and often we had to jump through all kinds of hoops and approvals and submitting prescriptions to get the medicine. But it continued to work well as WD aged and so it was worth it.
Then about a year ago the vet pharmacy in Holland that we dealt with stopped shipping to the USA. They too had become frustrated at our regulatory randomness. With Dr. Julia's help we tried a number of alternatives to provide the same level of pain-relief and comfort the discus did but none were as effective with no side effects. We did the best we could but White Dog began to move slower and developed a back-protective hunch. My beautiful runner no longer did.
Three weeks ago I read an article about canine back pain and discus compositum was mentioned. I emailed the author and found that her source was the place we had previously used in Holland! Without hesitation, I placed an order online and whispered prayers that White Dog would soon have the relief we know this medicine provided.
Last Wednesday it arrived. No problems, no questions, no additional forms or charges. White Dog got her first dose on Thursday and Friday she did zoomies in the yard, asked to go for a car ride, and resumed her pre-bedtime walk ritual.
Today was dose #2 and there is actually a bounce in her step. I am overjoyed. The Little White Dog of My Heart is smiling.
The disaster planner/hoarder in me wants to stockpile this medication to guard against scarcity again. Is that crazy or just being a protective dog momma?
